UCD Extension Class

Wine Appreciation: Main Street Cellars

How do experts recognize, identify and describe wines? In this class students will learn what to look for in a glass of wine and how to describe it. The instructor will identify the world’s major growing regions and discuss the process of grape growing and its vital importance to the success or failure of the wine and the winemaker. Finally, students will learn strategies for making good or even great food and wine matches and learn why some combinations work and some do not. There will be no wine tasting during this class.

Mike Petersen owner and wine buyer for Main Street Cellars in Winters, is a 25-year veteran of the wine industry. Northern California grapes are part of Petersen’s heritage. His family settled in Napa in the 1850s and planted orchards and vineyards. Before opening Main Street Cellars, Petersen worked at Shenandoah Vineyards and Sobon Estates Winery in Amador County as well as four years in the Napa Valley as assistant winemaker for Carneros Creek Winery. More recently, he worked as the wine buyer for Nugget Market in Vacaville. He has traveled extensively to broaden his palate and has supplemented his first-hand experience with education at UC Davis and Napa College, where he studied enology, wine making and wine appreciation. In 2003 he became a certified Level 1 Sommelier through the Culinary Institute of America in Napa.
